This PowerPoint provides a brief introduction on how to identify gospel and biblical figures in early Christian art. Most of all I have focused on how to identify Jesus and how to identify women. Jesus and women are often confused in catacomb art because Jesus is typically depicted with longer hair than the men around him and also without a beard. One of the most frequent and fascinating figures found in early Christian art is a woman with her arms raised — also known as the female Orante — and I end with many beautiful images of her.
