Peter, Paul and Mary in Early Art

Peter, Paul and Mary in Early Art from Ally Kateusz

This is a fun PowerPoint to show the different ways that Peter and Paul were depicted in the early Christian era. Sometimes, most famously by Paul himself and also by the writer of 1 Clement, Peter and Paul were depicted as enemies. Later, however, some communities, especially in Rome, it seems, attempted to re-write history and make it appear as if they had always gotten along and thus were faithful examples of a presumably peaceful apostolic age. From the beginnings, however, different Christ followers took away different understandings about what Jesus taught. The oldest evidence strongly suggests that Peter and Paul exemplified these early communities with their deeply different points of view. Quite humorously, some artists appear to have used women, especially Mary, in the role of peacemaker between Peter and Paul.
