In a nutshell, we often find two or more traditions about many topics in the communities of the early Christ followers, including the topic of women’s gender roles. These two sarcophagi illustrate the differences in how two different communities treated women, in this case, how they depicted the mother in the scene of the Raising of Jairus’s daughter. These gospel figures are stand ins for how women themselves were almost certainly seen in these two communities–in one community, relegated to lay at the men’s feet, and in the other community, standing side by side with the men.
